By demonstrating antiangiogenic effects of low doses of rapamycin, a recent article in Nature Medicine allows us to conceptually connect antiangiogenic therapy with protection of normal cells for selective targeting of cancer cells. We discuss how the same agent can be chosen to target either normal cells (to inhibit angiogenesis and to protect normal cells from chemotherapy) or cancer cells (to prevent hypoxia-resistance and to suppress ‘target-dependent’ cancer cells).
