A new line of p53 knockout mice bearing a tyrosinase coat color marker that permits the visual identification of heterozygous and homozygous mice according to their coat color is described by Zheng, Vogel, Donehower, and Bradley. This represents a significant technical advance that could eliminate a great deal of the costly and time-consuming process of genotyping p53 mice. The homozygous mutant p53-tyrosinase mice display a tumor incidence and spectrum virtually identical to previously reported and widely studied p53-null mice.
