Correction for “The PIK3CA gene is mutated with high frequency in human breast cancers” by Bachman et al. Cancer Biology and Therapy 2004 Vol. 3 No. 8 pp.772-775.
Drs. Li Lin and Matthew Ellis have recently brought to our attention that the PIK3CA somatic mutation described for the breast cancer cell line, MCF-7, was incorrectly reported in Table 2 of our manuscript. The correct mutation is still within exon 9 but is nine nucleotides downstream and should read: G1633A:E545K. We have discovered that during the preparation of our manuscript we had transcribed the incorrect mutation for this particular cell line (G1624A:E542K), despite sequencing the correct mutation. In addition, we have resequenced all of our reported cell lines and verified that the stated mutations are correct. Significantly, the G1633A:E545K mutation has recently been described in primary human breast cancers after the publication of our results.1,2 Thus, the frequency and spectra of mutations in our study as well as the significance to human breast cancer remain unchanged. We regret this error and apologize for any inconvenience it may have caused.
